Please consider the
following topics course offered Spring 2007:
Comp 194-01: An
Introduction to Computer Science through Multimedia and Robotics Applications
Instructor: Susan Fox
Meets: MWF 3:30-4:30pm, OLRI 247
Lab section: Tuesday,
1:00-2:30pm, OLRI 256

This
course will introduce students to computer science, including central concepts
of the field such as design and implementation of algorithms and programs,
testing and analyzing programs, and the representation of information within
the computer. Our exploration of
these central ideas, however, will be organized around two major application
areas: multimedia processing and robotics. We will explore techniques for manipulating images, sound,
and text. If you ever wondered how Photoshop does what it does, or wondered
what MP3 was, this course will help to answer your questions. We will also learn about control
systems for autonomous robots. If you want to know more about NASA's Mars exploration
robots, or hope to own a Roomba some day, this course might be for you,
too. We will use the Python
programming language and a number of supporting software systems.
This
course replaces a section of Comp 123, Core Concepts in Computer Science, this
semester. Students who were
considering taking Comp 123 can take this course instead. This course will count as a
replacement of Comp 123 for any college or departmental requirement.
No
prerequisites, and no experience required.
