Whos That?
by Jim Hoppe, Dean of StudentsThose of you who have been around the College for a while will hear a new name when you call a familiar number. The Dean of Students Office is now called the Office of Student Affairs to reflect some new duties and division of responsibility. As of June 1st this past summer Laurie Hamre, who has been Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students for 15 years assumed greater responsibility for campus wide projects. Her new title is Vice President for Student Affairs. At the same time, Jim Hoppe, who had been Associate Dean of Students for three years, assumed the title Dean of Students. What does this mean? For one thing, it means the name of our office has changed to reflect the broader scope of activities which occur there. Both Laurie and Jim, along with Assistant Dean of Students Irene Kao and Executive Assistant Pat Traynor will continue to provide service to students and families. The primary difference is that as Dean, Jim would be the primary contact for student and family issues. He will assume responsibility for daily student life on campus. Laurie will maintain responsibility for College wide projects, and continue to supervise Athletics, Multicultural Life, the College Chaplain, Student Services--which includes Career Development Center, and Health Services--in addition to supervising the Dean of Students. As Dean of Students, Jim will supervise Residence Life, Campus Programs, the Campus Center and International Student Programs, in addition to being generally responsible for Orientation, Leadership Development, student conduct, student government and student media.
All of us in the Office of Student Affairs and student affairs campus wide look forward to working with you in the future.
