Macalester College Mathematics Major
Beginning in the academic year 2008-2009, the requirements for a major in Mathematics are as follows.
See the Macalester College Catalog for course descriptions.
| Introductory Courses (prerequisites in parentheses). Take all
of these courses. These may be taken in any order, though we highly recommend
taking 136 before 236 and that these three courses be completed by the end of the sophomore year. |
| Math 136 |
Discrete Mathematics |
Every Semester |
Exceptionally well-prepared students may replace this with a second course from the Discrete or Continuous Core below. |
| Math 236 |
Linear Algebra (Math 136 or Math 137 or, with permission of instructor, Math 135) |
Every Semester |
|
| Math 237 |
Multivariable Calculus (Math 137) |
Every Semester |
The prerequisite course, Math 137, is single variable
calculus for students who have had some calculus in high school.
Students with no high school calculus should start in Math 135 Applied
Calculus. |
| Discrete Core: Take at least one of these courses, which focus on mathematical subjects that are discrete in nature. |
