Timeline of Macalester's history in the Campus Center

Macalester at 150 Years

This year at Macalester College, we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of our founding. Throughout the year, we’re reflecting on our history, who we are today, and where we’re headed as we implement our new strategic plan.

Sesquicentennial Events

As we mark 150 years since the college’s founding in 1874, we’re delighted to announce plans for a year of reflection, celebration, and joy—and you’re invited.

Throughout 2024, we’ll honor defining moments in the college’s history, and the many people over generations who have nurtured Macalester.

Macalester’s Founding

1874: Founded in 1874 on Dakota Land, Macalester opened in 1885 with five professors, six first-year students and fifty-two prep students. The college hoped to provide a rigorous education for people in the area. That area has expanded to represent students from over 100 countries.
