Academic Concentrations
What is a Concentration?
Concentrations at Macalester allow students to analyze themes, approaches, and geographic areas that cut across departments and fields. Concentrations typically consist of 5-8 courses and students choose from classes in their majors, their general education requirements, and other electives to create their pathway through the concentration. Experiential learning can be a component of concentrations. Students often align internships, community-based research, study-away, and social entrepreneurship with their concentration of interest.
Concentrations are managed by faculty and housed in their respective academic departments, and usually governed by a faculty committee. The IGC supports overall administration and programming of the concentrations.
