Faculty Leader:

Dr. Kelly MacGregor

Dr. Kelly MacGregor is a Professor of Geology at Macalester College, where she has been teaching since 2003. She has a B.A. in Geology (and almost Art History!) from Williams College, and a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from UC Santa Cruz. Professor MacGregor is a geomorphologist – someone who studies the dynamic forces that shape the Earth’s surface – and has an interest in how humans interact with landscapes. Her expertise in glacier dynamics and subglacial erosion has brought her to work and live on glaciers in Alaska, British Columbia, Montana, and Argentina. Professor MacGregor once spent eight weeks on an Alaskan glacier without leaving (and without a shower). She was a postdoctoral fellow at the US Geological Survey in Menlo Park, CA, where she studied the impact of dams on water and sediment transport in the Columbia River Basin.
Professor MacGregor is currently working on several projects, including using lake sediment cores to understand climate and environmental change in Glacier National Park, Montana, over the past 18,000 years, and examining interactions between sediment and native mussels in rivers and lakes in Minnesota. Her recent work is focused on landscape changes over the last century in response to anthropogenic changes. Professor MacGregor teaches courses in Environmental Geology, Geomorphology, Dynamic Earth and Global Change, Geocinema, Surface and Groundwater Hydrology, and Art and Science of Landscapes. She enjoys reading YA and vampire romance novels, gardening, sweating in her backyard sauna, running, cooking, and cross-country skiing.
