Art 375-01: Race, Ethnicity, Gender and Class in American Art

Course Description

This course explores issues of diversity in 20th century American Art within the historical, socio-political, and cultural context in which they developed. It will analyze ways in which American visual artists chose to respond to the issues of race, ethnicity, class and gender and how these concepts shaped their experiences and constructed their identities. The course will address several questions: What is the significance of race/ethnicity, class and gender in the 20th century and contemporary American art? How do academic and public discourse explain/camouflage/reproduce race, class, and gender? Discussions will be focused on individual works of art, including photography, film, installation and video, and on historical and theoretical writings related to the problematic of “difference.” (4 cr)
