About

Biochemistry students are biology and chemistry majors (or both) who choose to tailor their coursework to focus on the molecules and chemical reactions of life through the addition of a Biochemistry Emphasis.

The Biochemistry Emphasis draws upon faculty expertise from both the Biology and Chemistry Departments, resulting in a group of professors engaged in active research on diverse topics. Many Biochemistry Emphasis students participate in summer research opportunities with Macalester faculty, and gain additional experience in courses that incorporate independent research questions in the laboratory. Opportunities for students to get involved in biochemistry research also extend beyond Macalester, through connections within the broader Twin Cities research community.  Recent collaborations have connected students with scientists at the University of Minnesota, several fortune 500 companies (Medtronic, Bayer, 3M), and the Mayo Clinic.
