Ahmed Hassan: "Psychotherapy, Islam and Somali Refugees in Minnesota"
How do Minnesota’s Somalis approach issues of mental health? And how do mental health practitioners navigate between traditional approaches, Western talk therapy and biomedical modalities? Please join us in Carnegie 06A on Tuesday, February 7, from 11:45a - 1:00p to hear Ahmed Hassan present “Psychotherapy, Islam and Somali refugees in Minnesota.” Hassan is one of only 4 licensed Somali-speaking psychotherapists in Minnesota. In this talk, he will discuss the history of Somali refugees in Minnesota, some of the difficulties they face; colloquial idioms for understanding psychological well-being; and his own experiences practicing transcultural psychotherapy. Lunch will be provided. Co-sponsored by Anthropology & International Studies
