In a huge win for environmentalists, the Biden-Harris Administration just announced they would protect the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness from destructive sulfide mining. At the same time, the Rio Tinto corporation – a global mining company known for environmental and human rights abuse – is planning to develop a nickel sulfide mine near the Mississippi River, in an area of northern Minnesota that is also crossed by the Line 3 oil pipeline.

The “Talon Mine” is being touted as a “Green Mine” because the nickel is slated to be used in some Tesla batteries (most EVs use other minerals). However, these claims downplay the dangerous impacts on Indigenous communities and the Northland environment.
