The Chopin Society Presents Pianist Richard Goode

Richard Goode has been hailed for music-making of tremendous emotional power, depth, and expressiveness, and has been acknowledged worldwide as one of today’s leading interpreters of Classical and Romantic music. In regular performances with the major orchestras, recitals in the world’s music capitals, masterclasses in person or online, and through his extensive and acclaimed Nonesuch recordings, he has won a large and devoted following.

An exclusive Nonesuch recording artist, Goode has made more than two dozen recordings over the years, ranging from solo and chamber works to lieder and concertos. His 10-CD set of the complete Beethoven sonatas cycle, the first-ever by an American-born pianist, was nominated for a Grammy and has been ranked among the most distinguished recordings of this repertoire.

In recent seasons, Richard Goode appeared as soloist with Louis Langrée and the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra in a program filmed as part of a documentary celebrating the 50th anniversary of one of the country's most popular summer musical events.

A native of New York, Richard Goode studied with Elvira Szigeti and Claude Frank, with Nadia Reisenberg at the Mannes College of Music, and with Rudolf Serkin at the Curtis Institute.  His numerous prizes over the years include the Young Concert Artists Award, First Prize in the Clara Haskil Competition, the Avery Fisher Prize, and a Grammy award for the Brahms Sonatas recorded with clarinetist Richard Stoltzman.

Mr. Goode served as co-Artistic Director of the renowned Marlboro Music School and Festival in Vermont from 1999 through 2013. In Fall 2021, Mr. Goode joined the Peabody Conservatory as Distinguished Artist Faculty. He is married to the violinist Marcia Weinfeld, and, when the Goodes are not on tour, they and their collection of some 5,000 volumes live in New York City.

“It is virtually impossible to walk away from one of Mr. Goode’s recitals without the sense of having gained some new insight, subtle or otherwise, into the works he played or about pianism itself.” — The New York Times

“…the pianist’s pianist, a superb artist who at best attacks the classical repertoire with the full force of his heart and mind.” — The Times, London

“…majestic, profound readings. Mr. Goode’s playing throughout was organic and inspired, the noble, introspective themes unfolding with a simplicity that rendered them all the more moving.” — The New York Times

“Every time we hear him, he impresses us as better than we remembered, surprising us, surpassing our expectations and communicating perceptions that stay in the mind.” — Gramophone

“Richard Goode is one of the finest pianists in the world. Few can match his unfailingly beautiful tone, effortless technical command, interpretive insight and total emotional commitment to the music he plays.” — The Washington Post

“A total performance that was a joy in the ear, a nourishment for the mind and an uplift for the spirit. For this listener, it was a high point of the musical year.” — The Los Angeles Times

“...the music flowed through him with such mellow insights, deep emotional involvement and self-effacing pianism that you felt as though you were confronting the composers’ thought processes directly rather than through an interpreter.” — The Chicago Tribune

“Goode has so thoroughly entered into the spirit of the compositions he performs that you’d swear the composer himself was at the keyboard.” — Toronto Globe and Mail
