Philosophy Colloquium: Robin Dembroff, Yale University

"Erecting Real Men".

Abstract: We've been told that men as a group are the winners of gender, buoyed by manhood in a patriarchal society. But when we look around, we find that many groups of men are systematically made into targets of state, economic, or sexual violence. Many are also socialized, through threat of emasculation, to perpetuate gendered violence against both women and other men. In this talk, I argue that patriarchy is not incidental to these outcomes for men. It is responsible for them.

Please join the Philosophy department for this talk at 4:40 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7th, in the 4th floor lounge of Old Main (400). All are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
