Becoming Settler-Colonial: Indigeneity and Contemporary Taiwanese Nationalism

Professor Jason McGrath (Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Minnesota) will present a talk titled Becoming Settler-Colonial: Indigeneity and Contemporary Taiwanese Nationalism
Through the example of the recent Taiwan public television series Seqalu: Formosa 1867, this presentation will examine how contemporary Taiwanese nationalism reckons with issues of indigeneity and how theories of settler colonialism illuminate questions of Taiwanese identity, particularly insofar as it is asserted as separate from China.
This talk is sponsored by the Media and Cultural Studies department as a part of the MCST Lunch Hour Talks series.
