Historical Minneapolis’ “Incubator Baby Institute” and How To Turn Local Architecture (and Your College Papers) Into National Podcasts
Katie Thornton will present a talk/workshop called Historical Minneapolis’ “Incubator Baby Institute” and How To Turn Local Architecture (and Your College Papers) Into National Podcasts
Katie Thornton is a freelance writer and podcast producer in Minneapolis, whose work has appeared on/in outlets like 99% Invisible, The Guardian, The Atlantic, National Geographic, The Washington Post, and WNYC, and has been honored with a Peabody Award. Her reporting and research focuses on infrastructure, design, and media, and she often gets story ideas from local history and architecture. In this informal presentation, Katie will share the history of one of her favorite Twin Cities buildings -- an apartment complex that was once a de facto hospital for premature babies and the flagship attraction of an early 20th century amusement park -- and how she turned a college paper on the attraction into an episode of the award-winning podcast 99% Invisible.
This talk is sponsored by the Media and Cultural Studies department as a part of the MCST Lunch Hour Talks series.
