Alessandra Williams, PhD, is an assistant professor of dance at Rutgers University-New Brunswick who researches dance, sexuality, race, gender, and transnationalism.
Her fellowships include the Early Career Faculty Fellowship with the Institute for the Study of Global Racial Justice (2023-4) and the Inclusive Excellence Fellowship with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (2018–19). She has performed with the Ananya Dance Theatre company in the evening-length dances: Dastak and Altars of Our Sacred Geometries (2021), Sutrajāl (2019), Shaatranga (2018), Shyamali (2017), Horidraa (2016), Roktim (2015), Moreechika (2012), Ashesh Barsha ( 2009), and Pipaashaa (2007). She is coeditor of the anthology Dancing Transnational Feminisms: Ananya Dance Theatre and the Art of Social Justice (2022) alongside co-editors Ananya Chatterjea and Hui Wilcox, and she has written about cross-cultural solidarity in other publications such as The Drama Review in 2022, Dance Teacher Online in 2021; Relay Relay in 2018, and Talking Black Dance Inside Out/Outside In from 2016. Her current book project identifies artistic and historical foundations for queer black dance based on the choreographies and dance-films of David Roussève and the REALITY dance company. And, as a senior Yorchhā educator and yoga-alliance certified instructor, she facilitates workshops on movement, vocal-work, and intergenerational memory. Additionally, she is a Macalester '07 and Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship program alum.
