French Lecture Series - History & Reparations
The French Lecture Series are off to a great start as the department co-sponsors a unique event in which Mac Alum, Westenley Alcenat '10 will be one of the panelists.
In 2024, the United Nations (UN) is wrapping up its“International Decade for People of African Descent.”
To observe the decade’s theme“People of African Descent: Recognition, Justice, and Development,”the Macalester College History Department and campus partners will host an event on History and Reparations, focusing on persons of African Descent.
As the momentum for reparations movements grows, multiple efforts based on geographical and chronological elements
have emerged. This event aims to demonstrate how knowing about our pasts can provide us with opportunities to act.
The event will include short presentations, led by four speakers, and conclude with a discussion session. The selected speakers will address different iterations of reparations work and the significance of History in conceptualizing that work. Speakers will focus on existing international, state, and local reparations efforts.
The hybrid event will take place in the Weyerhaeuser Board Room on September 25, 2024, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The event will also be available to registrants as a webinar. Please see poster on how to register for the live stream.
Co-sponsors include African Studies, Art & Art History, Educational Studies, Environmental Studies, French and Francophone Studies, History, and Political Science as well as the KAGIC and the Provost’s Office.
