MCST Lunch Hour Talk: Unions and the Entertainment Industries

Please join us for the RESCHEDULED panel conversation and workshop on the role of unions in the entertainment industries, now taking place on November 5. Yes, this event is taking place on election day, but hopefully that will make the conversation about labor and culture even more valuable.

In 2023, the United States Arts and Entertainment Sector had a unionization rate of 12.1%, well above the national rate of 10% (6% in the private sector). Also in 2023, the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) launched what would become one of the longest strikes in US history. In an interactive session involving small group discussion and scenario examination, we will explore the importance of labor representation in an industry that is notorious for its organizing challenges, some of the factors that underpin the unionization rate, and the challenges arrayed against the people involved in the industry that is explicitly about our very culture.Lunch provided • Humanities 412 • Tuesday, November 5 • noon-1pm
