MCST Lunch Hour Talk: Gabrielle Civil "In and Out of Place"

Thursday, April 10 at 12:00 PM

Humanities 412, Macalester College

Join us for a special presentation by black feminist performance artist, poet, and writer Gabrielle Civil as she explores the question: "What does it mean to be in a place and out of place at the same time?"

Civil will discuss her work In and Out of Place, which archives her 2008-2009 Fulbright fellowship in Mexico. Through diary entries, images, performance texts, and critical commentary, she examines the intersections of identity, belonging, and artistic expression.

Originally from Detroit, Civil has premiered over fifty performance art works globally. Her published works include Swallow the Fish (2017), Experiments in Joy (2019), ( ghost gestures ) (2021), and the déjà vu (2022).

This thought-provoking lecture will investigate themes of heritage, culture, and the expansive possibilities of performance art. The aim of Civil's work is to open up space—both literally and figuratively—for new conversations and perspectives.

All are welcome to attend. Free lunch is provided.
