Chopin Society Presents Pianist Boris Giltburg

Boris Giltburg, who studied piano first with his mother in Moscow, and later with Arie Vardi in Israel, today enjoys a flourishing career and reputation as a formidable and charismatic presence at the keyboard. Not surprisingly, he is major competition winner, most notably of the 2013 Queen Elisabeth in Brussels. Following his BBC Proms debut in 2010, concert tours have taken him to five continents, with recitals in places such as Zurich's Tonhalle, Southbank Centre, the Louvre, Concertgebouw, Wigmore and Carnegie Hall. Guest appearances with high-profile orchestras and conductors have been in similarly celebrated venues. Boris currently serves as Resident Artist at two orchestras in Brussels and another at The Hague in Amsterdam. His 2012 Orchid release of Prokofiev's 'War' Sonatas, which was shortlisted for the critics' award at the Classical Brits, was followed by another acclaimed disc of sonatas by Rachmaninov, Liszt, and Grieg. Now in his third year of a long-term contract with Naxos, he has made individual solo recordings of Schumann, Beethoven, and Rachmaninoff, plus a CD of Shostakovich concertos with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic that received a Diapason d'Or. His latest Naxos release, of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Carlos Miguel Prieto, coupled with the Etudes-Tableaux, Opus 33, has also received high marks. At home in repertoire ranging from Beethoven to Shostakovich, he has also become known as a leading interpreter of Rachmaninoff, and it is that composer's Preludes that make up his Minnesota program.

"Biting and incisive and yet without needless aggression and with powerful, golden-brown sonority, bounding like a cat, a complete master of the idiom."
