WMCN Film Series: Always for Pleasure // Anthem
WMCN will screen Les Blank's classic Always For Pleasure and Marlon Riggs's Anthem in the WMCN studios.
Blank's Always For Pleasure (1978) is a spirited look at New Orleans social traditions, including the annual Mardi Gras celebration. A number of notable musicians and personalities feature in Always For Pleasure, including The Neville Brothers, Allen Toussaint, and Professor Longhair. Marlon Riggs's Anthem (1992) is a free-form music video that confronts issues of Black male sexuality and identity during the HIV/AIDS crisis.
Both these works will be screened in acknowledgment of Black History Month. WMCN hopes to continue a discussion about the role of Black cultural production in the intwined histories of film and music.
Screening will begin at 7:30 and continue until approximately 8:45. Respectful refreshments are encouraged.
