The Chopin Society presents pianist Joyce Yang
Returning to the series is Korean-born Joyce Yang, who first appeared with us in 2009. An honors graduate of Juilliard, she came to wide public attention as winner of the Silver Medal and other top prizes at the 2005 Van Cliburn Competition. Since then, she has played with nearly every major orchestra of the world and most recently completed a five-concert tour with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Edo De Waart. Regular festival appearances include the Aspen Summer Music Festival, La Jolla SummerFest, and the Seattle Chamber Music Society. She also works frequently with chamber groups, such as the Takács and Alexander String Quartets. With her longtime duet partner violinist Augustin Hadelich, she was nominated for a 2018 Grammy for their CD of Franck, Kurtág, Schumann, and Andre Previn. Other recordings include two solo albums – Wild Dreams and Collage – and two chamber discs with the Alexander String Quartet. A lively and engaging personality, Joyce is also focused on innovative programming and ways to introduce classical music to new audiences, particularly with concerts that bring together music and other art forms. She enjoys a unique working relationship with the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, with whom she recently completed a project centered on Schumann’s Carnaval.
“But the standout was Joyce Yang, who gave a knockout performance of the alternately poetic, fiery and occasionally jazz-tinged piano line.”
