Geology Research Seminar: "Adventures in Seismology: Exploring a Dynamic Earth on Land and at Sea"

Professor James Gaherty, School of Earth & Sustainability, Northern Arizona University, will speak on "Adventures in SeismologyExploring a Dynamic Earth on Land and at Sea."

"Seismic imaging provides a means to peer deep into Earth’s crust and mantle to study the processes that drive deformation of Earth’s surface, including earthquakes and volcanoes.  Recent technological advancements in portable seismic instruments are allowing scientists to probe previously inaccessible reaches of the globe, including the deep seafloor and the remotest of continental interiors.  The innovative experiments exploiting this technology offer fantastic opportunities for student participation in the field and in the laboratory.  In this talk I will highlight recent explorations of Earth dynamics in the western Pacific Basin and the East African Rift, including a brief summary of the remarkable field efforts, and the underlying science."
