In Response: Rituals of Regard and Recollection

6–7 pm extended gallery hours
7 pm program

Exhibition curator Tricia Heuring invites artist Isa Gagarin and curator Esther Callahan to join a conversational response to the premise for 'Rituals of Regard and Recollection.' Together they will discuss possibilities for drawing as practice and record, deep looking as a personal method to experience art, and new understanding formed through the process of curating through a collection. Attend to learn more about the exhibition from the curator and discuss the act of looking.

Esther Callahan is a practitioner of joy through her work as an independent curator, facilitator, trainer, candy maker and community organizer. With roots in an academic degree in Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies and in Social Justice Leadership, she is dedicated to interrogating the impact of racial and gender equity. She is a former Curatorial Fellow at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) and currently the Program Director for Midwest Mixed and the Interim Program Director for Emerging Curators Institute.

Originally from Guam and Hawai’i, Isa Gagarin is a visual artist based in Minneapolis. Educated in painting, Gagarin’s recent work is focused on site-specific installation. She approaches the installation process as a way to respond to the unique characteristics of different spaces, including light, color relationships and materiality. She has presented work throughout Minnesota including Hair + Nails Gallery, Midway Contemporary Art, Rochester Art Center, Kiehle Gallery (St. Cloud University), Regis Center for Art Quarter Gallery (University of Minnesota) and the White Page.

Tricia Heuring is a Thai American curator and arts organizer. Her curatorial practice is balanced between individualized support for emerging artists and building systemic change in the nonprofit arts sector. She is the co-founder of Public Functionary, a multidisciplinary arts and exhibition platform now in its seventh year of programming. Tricia is a graduate of Macalester College and holds an M.A. in arts management from St. Mary’s University. Heuring currently teaches at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
