Big Questions: What Is the Future of a Liberal Arts Education?
Each year, a new batch of college graduates takes a deep breath before a job interview. Candidates with liberal arts degrees may practice responses to certain questions: What advantages does a liberal arts education offer? How does a liberal arts education inspire innovation? Why should I hire you? As Macalester prepares students for life beyond the campus, what are the future needs of employers and industries? How does a liberal arts education prepare students to chart their own paths, whether in academia, industry, public service, or entrepreneurship? How does a liberal arts education reinforce the Macalester pillars of internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society?
Join President Suzanne Rivera and Executive Vice President and Provost Lisa Anderson-Levy in conversation with alumni Michael Sneed ’81, Shelley Carthen Watson ’82, and Mihir Desai ’90 on what makes liberal arts grads special and why they like to hire them.
6:30PM Pre-reception, Lowe Dayton Arts Commons, Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center
7:00PM - 8:00PM Program, Mairs Concert Hall
The safety of our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and guests is of primary importance. Given the recent rise in COVID-19 cases, Macalester is requiring that all in-person Inauguration attendees be fully vaccinated or obtain a negative COVID test 48 hours prior to the event. Further, we will ask that all attendees wear face coverings whenever indoors on campus and stay home if they have had a known exposure within 14 days of the Inauguration or are experiencing any COVID symptoms. We will continue to monitor COVID-19 positivity rates and update campus protocols as appropriate.
