Spell as two words, both as noun and adjective, unless quoting from a source that spells as one word.

historical events and programs

Most historical events and programs are capitalized: the Arab Spring, Black Lives Matter, the Great Depression, the Industrial Revolution.

But some are lowercase: the baby boom, the crash of 1929, the gold rush, the war on terror (8.75)

historical periods

Descriptive designations of periods are lowercased, except for proper nouns: the baroque period; imperial Rome; the Victorian era (8.72).

Other periods are traditionally capitalized: the Dark Ages; the Gay Nineties; the Jazz Age (8.73)

Pre-historical cultural periods are capitalized: Bronze Age, Ice Age, Iron Age, Stone Age (8.74)

hometown

See city names, US, and city names, international.

Honors Program

Capitalize when referring to Macalester’s formal program as described under Academic Programs and Advising.

honors projects

Use roman type and place in quotes: “The Political Economy of American Military Aid and Repression.” Do not italicize.

honorifics

Always capitalize: the First Lady, the First Gentleman; Her Majesty; her Royal Highness; Mr. President; Madam Speaker. (8.33)

Note lowercase rule in other contexts: Joe Biden, president of the United States, was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
