What does the Dean of Students Office do?

The Dean of Students Office is part of the Division of Student Affairs, reporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs. The Dean of Students Office serves as the primary administrative contact and advocate for students. Our charge is to work directly with students to provide services, resources and programs that enhance student life and the Macalester Community. Offices directly reporting to the Dean of Students can be viewed in our Org Chart here. Some of the functions of the Dean of Students Office are to:

  • Provide General Assistance to Students, Parents, and/or Families with Concerns and Questions

    The Dean of Students Office is a place to get direction for resources, services and programs on campus; ask questions; find help navigating college campus policies. Parents and/or Families may also use the Dean of Students Office when trying to understand the Who, What, When, Why, Where on campus. The best way to reach us is by email at .   • Point of Contact for Off-Campus Living and Neighborhood Concerns

    Information for Macalester students who are exploring living off campus, can visit the Off-Campus Living page. This page provides great resources and information for students, from rental listings, need/interest networking (specifically for Mac students), and renting tips.

    If you are seeking resources to the Macalester Neighborhood, please visit the High Winds Fund page. The High Winds Fund is a great resource for all things neighbor related, from the environment, to housing listings for sale or rent, and community.

  • Responsible for the Scots Care Program and Behavior Intervention Team

    The Scots Care Case Management Team is a centralized system for faculty, staff, students, and others to refer concerns regarding students who may be exhibiting disruptive, distressed, or high-risk behaviors. This system is designed to offer support to Macalester students who are experiencing significant personal, wellbeing, or academic concerns and other challenges, including those which may impact the campus community.

  • Oversees the Student Conduct Process and the Macalester College Student Handbook (FAQs)

    Students who have questions about Macalester’s conduct process, please refer to this FAQ sheet and do not hesitate to reach out by email or phone with any questions. Email or call 651-696-6220.

  • Coordinates Process for Student Leave of Absence, Leave Extension and Withdraws from the College

    When a student is considering taking a Leave of Absence; already on a Leave of Absence and deciding whether an extension is needed; or deciding on a Withdraw from the College request; the Dean of Students Office can help. Information about these processes can be found in the Student Handbook (pages 10-12) and on the Leave, Leave Extension, Withdraw webpage. The Dean of Students Office coordinates these administrative processes and is happy to meet/chat with any student who has questions about taking a Leave of Absence or Withdrawing from the College.   • Serves on Academic Standing Status Committee
