Statement of Disability

The written report must contain a clear diagnostic statement that the student has migraine headaches. The diagnostic report should include specific recommendations for accommodations as well as an explanation as to why each accommodation is recommended.

Diagnostic Report

The specific diagnosis of migraine headaches must be arrived at by a physician following a detailed medical history and comprehensive physical examination. The symptoms should be comparable with the criteria developed by headache specialists who diagnose migraines. The symptoms which are common to migraine headaches include:

• Moderate-to-severe headaches which last from 4-72 hours
• Throbbing pain which often, but not always, affects one side of the head
• Pain which is aggravated by movement or physical activity and is associated with nausea
• Sensitivity to light, sound, or odors.

Professional Evaluator

The physical examination and diagnostic report must be completed by a licensed physician (internal medicine specialist or neurologist) who is experienced in diagnosing migraine headaches.

Date of Examination

The examination must have been completed within the past five years and be updated if changes occur while the student is enrolled at Macalester in order to ensure the provision of appropriate services.

Reminder

Requested documentation must be received in the Disability Services office, and a brief Intake Meeting (15 minutes or so) must be completed in order to receive accommodations during the semester.
