Can you use some help with a climate, environment or sustainability project?
We know organizations in the Twin Cities, and across this nation, are facing unexpected demands and new challenges in addressing the triple threats related to the pandemic, racial justice and climate crises.
We want to connect you to bright, creative, and thoughtful talent to meet your needs. Students participating in this program will all be enrolled in Prof. Christie Manning’s Environmental Studies Senior Practicum. In addition to working on your project, they will be mentored by Macalester staff and faculty in a semi-weekly evening professional development seminar.
Send us your project idea and we will match you with a student for 10 hours/week for the fall semester (September-December 2023).
For example, our students are skilled at:
- Analyzing datasets
- Researching and drafting grant proposals
- Providing spatial analysis and creating GIS project maps
- Developing social media campaigns
Organizational Partners
Submit a project application describing a question or problem that could use a fresh perspective: things like novel challenges you’re facing, reimagining and rebuilding toward racial justice, long-standing organizational issues, or nascent ideas you don’t have time to explore.
If it fits our program, we’ll schedule a 30-minute Partner Project Call to learn more about your organization and idea. We will describe how we will match you with a student and the kind of remote mentorship they will need.
There is no deadline to submit internship descriptions, though most students will have found an internship by late August. Students will be looking for opportunities starting in June. To have your internship opportunity considered by the largest number of students, please submit it early in the summer.

Macalester Alumni and Community Guest Experts
Even if you don’t have a project in mind, we need you to share your expertise with students as they work on their projects.
You will help students to think creatively about the questions they are hoping to answer, and strategically in mapping the critical next steps of their projects.
We will connect you with a student for a video chat to learn about their project and questions.
As student projects will vary in focus, we welcome guest experts of all fields to share their insights and experience. Please fill out the Guest Expert Interest Form by the preferred date of June 1, 2023, though forms will be accepted through August 1, 2023. We will get back to you.
