1.  Macalester’s Media and Cultural Studies Annual Lecture – April 4

The Leola Johnson Lecture in Media and Cultural Studies welcomes Shana M. griffin for a talk titled Black Feminist Geographies, Insurgent Ecologies, and Cartographic Reimagining Along the Mississippi River: An Artist Talk with Shana M. griffin. Shana will explore her projects DISPLACED, SOL, Cartographies of Violence Series, and Black Rivers (working title). Samples of her work are attached to this email.  This presentation takes place on April 4 from 4:45-6:00 pm in Artcom 102.  Light refreshments will be included.

2.  University of MN Environmental Justice Summit – April 4

Join the University of MN Environmental Justice Summit on April 4 from 10-2 pm, where students, community members, and passionate organizations unite to break down silos and address Minnesota’s environmental challenges. 3.  Make Art Not Waste Fashion Show – April 26

For Earth Week, the Macalester Sustainability Office is hosting a Make Art Not Waste Fashion Show on Friday, April 26, from 7-9 pm, to highlight alternatives to fast fashion. Students are invited to create a piece using only sustainable and/or recycled materials.   To participate and more details.

4.  Night Owl Farm Summer Internship

Night Owl Farm is looking for summer interns who would work alongside and learn about all aspects of sustainable agriculture including soil building and care, bed preparation, greenhouse work, planting, transplanting, cultivating, and harvesting. You will also help with washing and packing vegetables and CSA deliveries. They are very interested in maintaining biodiversity and are in the 6th year of an ongoing project of planting native wildflowers on a large scale to naturalize in their meadows to help their own honeybees as well as native pollinators and butterflies. They foster a nurturing and cooperative workplace environment and believe that a workplace should be a place to learn and make creative connections. Hours are somewhat flexible. No farming experience is necessary, although an ability to work hard outside in all kinds of weather is a requirement, as well as a desire to learn about farming.

5.  Mississippi Park Connection Fellowship

Mississippi Park Connection is offering a 10-week paid fellowship for diverse and underrepresented adults ages 18-25 to explore the different branches of the National Park Service including Visitor Services, Interpretation & Education, Natural & Cultural Resource Management, and the Volunteer Program. The fellows work directly with National Park Service Rangers, Mississippi Park Connection staff, and other park partners to facilitate educational programs, habitat restoration events, and wildlife monitoring on the Mississippi River.  Pay is $15 an hour and hours are approximately 32 hours per week; total of 10 weeks. May include weekend or evening hours. May require days that are longer or shorter than eight hours.

6.  Job Opening at Colorado State University

The Agricultural Sustainability and Climate Impacts (ASCI ) Lab at Colorado State University is seeking a motivated MS student to conduct research on the interactions between agriculture and climate change. This two-year position is fully funded and will begin in fall 2024. The ASCI Lab conducts research on a wide range of topics related to agricultural sustainability, climate change impacts, and climate change adaptation using spatial data science. Current projects include examining the sustainability of irrigated agriculture, modeling agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, using innovative statistical and machine learning methods to quantify climate hazards, and understanding the influence of agricultural land use change on climate. The selected MS student will work with Dr. Nathan Mueller to develop their MS research project.

7.  Summer Opportunity with Fund for the Public Interest

Want to spend your summer building skills that will help you launch your career, while working on urgent issues you care about like protecting the environment and our public health, and making good money?

Fund for the Public Interest is seeking hard-working individuals with a passion for social change to fill citizen outreach and Field Manager positions across the country this summer. With offices in selected cities across the country this summer, they are hiring full-time staff, with leadership opportunities available, to work on issues like stopping plastic pollution and getting pesticides out of our food supply.

• Get experience with the leadership and communication skills and connections needed to launch your career.
• Educate and engage citizens on pressing issues
• Build membership and raise money for environmental and social change groups

8.  Summer Jobs with MN DNR

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking hard working, service oriented, mission driven people.  It’s more than a job. MN DNR staff helps millions of visitors each year have unforgettable experiences at state parks and trails and pass along a love for the outdoors.  They are looking for these positions:

Building and Grounds – Responsible for building cleaning and repair, grounds and equipment maintenance, and park security

Parks and Trails Associate – Responsible for selling permits, organizing reservations, providing information to the public, cleaning and park security

9.  Nature Conservancy Internship

The Nature Conservancy is looking for a summer wetland science intern.  They are seeking an upper-level undergraduate students, recent graduates, or graduate students who are looking to gain hands-on experience in freshwater conservation and restoration work.

As an intern, you will split time between supporting the freshwater team and peatland work at the Tri-State Chapter (MN, ND, SD) of The Nature Conservancy. You will support the waters team through monitoring and assessment of wetlands in central Minnesota. You may participate in various levels of planning for restored stream and wetland sites across Minnesota.

You will also assist the peatlands team on in-the-field research on greenhouse gases, vegetation, and other variables at restored peatland sites in St. Louis County, MN. You will support the organization’s work to understand and promote peatland restoration as a natural climate solution in Minnesota and support the team’s work to protect and restore clean water and healthy ecosystems. More Info

10.  Citizens Utility Board of Minnesota Internship

The Citizens Utility Board of Minnesota (CUB) is seeking a motivated intern to support their outreach and communication programs. The intern will help people understand: their electric and gas bills, what energy bill assistance and affordability programs exist, how to reduce energy waste and save money, their options for renewable energy, and potential steps for home decarbonization/electrification. The intern will also support communications by developing and updating content for flyers, handouts, and the website.

This is a great opportunity for someone interested in a career in energy, environmental issues, community engagement, and/or consumer advocacy. The intern will be encouraged to build their professional experience and network as a part of the internship, and CUB’s staff will make introductions to professionals in areas of the intern’s interest.
