Professor Hornbach is an aquatic ecologist. Dan has spent a number of years researching freshwater mussel populations in the St. Croix River, a National Wild and Scenic River and is now working on the Minnesota River that some environmental groups have labeled as one of the most polluted rivers in the nation. He works jointly with Prof. Kelly MacGregor in the Geology Department. The EPA, Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service and the state of Minnesota have funded his work. Over 70 students have been involved in these projects. Dan has also been a member of two Endangered Species Recovery Teams sponsored by the Fish and Wildlife Service. Dan teaches courses in aquatic ecology.
