Outside Scholarships Specific to Study Away

Because students are unable to avail themselves of student employment opportunities while participating in Study Away, outside scholarships (that are awarded specifically to support Study Away) up to the standard semester student employment award will not affect grants from Macalester. 

In addition, if the student is participating in a Study Away program with residence, meal plan, or miscellaneous costs that exceed the equivalent costs of a semester at Macalester, outside scholarships up to the price differential will not affect grants from Macalester.

The standard Outside Scholarship Policy is then applied. Half of the remaining outside scholarship award will replace existing grants from Macalester.

Example:  A student has been selected to receive a $4,000 outside scholarship to be used specifically for Study Away expenses. The student has chosen a Study Away program with residence and meal plan costs that are $1,000 more than Macalester’s residence and meal plan charges. The student’s standard semester student employment award is $1,300.

Treatment:  The first $2,300 ($1,300 lost student employment + $1,000 excess program cost) of outside scholarship will have no impact on the amount of grants from Macalester. The standard Outside Scholarship policy is applied to the remaining $1,700.   The result is a reduction of $850 to grants from Macalester.
