The Law Warschaw Gallery is pleased to announce a Fall 2020 guest artist, Yvette Mayorga. Mayorga’s exhibit Monochromatic Dreams, originally slated for October 2020 at Law Warschaw will be rescheduled to a later date due to Covid-19 response. In the meantime, we are honored to engage Mayorga as a visiting artist through online engagement. We begin with a process-based series exclusively through the Law Warschaw Instagram feed: @lawwarschawgallery.
Beginning September 28 through November, Mayorga will share the images, video, and her process behind the creation of her developing work, Monuments of the Forgotten, 2020, a community-based installation. Originally created through piping workshops Mayorga held with community residents for the duration of her 2020 Monochromatic Dreams exhibition in Austin, Texas, she led workshops to decorate shoes with plaster using baking tools. The shoes are portraits of those worn to cross borders. Mayorga’s process of piping acrylic paint with baking tools is performative and references her lineage of contributing physical labor to America and its deleterious effects on the body over time. As a manifestation of labor, the encrusted shoes cannot be worn because they are fragile and inflict pain on the body.
About the Artist
Yvette Mayorga is a multimedia installation artist. She uses confection, industrial materials, and American iconography like the board game Candy Land as a conceptual framework to juxtapose the borderlands of the US/Mexico. Mayorga holds an MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Mayorga has exhibited at The Vincent Price Art Museum, EXPO Chicago, Art Design Chicago, LACMA’s Pacific Standard Time, the Chicago Artists Coalition, The National Museum of Mexican Art, GEARY Contemporary. Mayorga has attended The Fountainhead Residency, BOLT Residency, and is a recipient of the MAKER Grant.
