In collaboration with campus partners, Health Promotion aims to identify and change the cultural and systemic roots that perpetuate mental health challenges at Macalester. We offer a holistic approach to mental health. Some of the questions we ask are, “What cultural and environmental factors at Macalester influence stress levels among students?” “How can we form partnerships with campus departments to form shared understandings of mental health, and work together to make positive changes?”
How does Health Promotion promote mental health?
Health Promotion leads culture-changing initiatives that invite the Macalester community to think about facets of our community that exacerbate mental health challenges, and build skills to play an active role in promoting positive mental well-being. We offer a number of workshops and programs that target this complex spectrum of challenges. Some examples are:
- Requestable “Mental Health @ Mac” workshops: a guide for how to support peers with their mental health
- Requestable “Mac Facts” workshop: a social norms workshop that aims to mobilize people to seek mental health support
- Requestable “QPR” workshops: an evidence-based suicide prevention training
- Please fill out this form to request any of our workshops.
We cannot do this work alone. It takes all of us to instill a campus-wide culture to promote positive mental health and support those who may be struggling. We are proud, active collaborators and have many partnerships with several departments across campus. Residential Life, Center for Student Leadership and Engagement, and the Sustainability Office are just some of our incredible partners. Some examples of partnerships include:
- Health Promotion partners with Residential Life to train Residential Advisors on suicide prevention, or QPR.
- Health Promotion partners with faculty in First-Year Courses (FYCs) on peer-to-peer mental health support.
