The Hamre Center is committed to advancing the health professions. This is accomplished by providing training opportunities such as residencies, graduate practicums, internships, and assistantships. Questions about clinical training should be directed to the listed staff person.
Counseling: Macalester College Hamre Center for Health and Wellness- Counseling Services provides training to students of counseling, psychology, or social work who are interested in counseling young adults in a college campus setting. Students who have completed at least one year of supervised training are preferred but we are sometimes open to students who have had no prior training. The Hamre Center is an integrated health care unit of which Counseling Services is a part. Therefore, the site offers the opportunity to work in collaboration with other providers including nurse practitioners, physicians, psychologists, social workers, professional counselors, psychiatrists, and health educators. Students will provide individual short-term mental health counseling, referral, and crisis intervention for 15-20 hours per week during the academic calendar starting late August and ending early May with break between semesters during J term, Students must be available Tuesday mornings to attend counseling staff meetings (currently done virtually) and Wednesday mornings for case consultations done in person. Students may also have an opportunity to work collaboratively with other student affairs departments in the provision of workshops or support groups. Supervision is provided by an on site doctoral-level licensed psychologist and a licensed professional social worker. We strive to bring in two practicum students a year. There is a small stipend available for $500 per semester for two semesters.
