JED Campus

Protecting the Emotional Health of Teens and Young Adults

JED campus is a signature program of the JED Foundation (JED) designed to guide schools through a collaborative process of comprehensive systems, program and policy development with customized support to build upon existing student mental health, substance use and suicide prevention efforts.

 

Macalester’s JED Campus work

Macalester has been a part of the JED Campus program since Fall 2019.  Below is a timeline of our process as well as our highlights of the success and future goals related to the JED Campus project.  The initiatives named below are campus wide efforts that align with JED’s model for promoting mental health.  Thank you to our many colleagues who contribute to student well-being.

Areas and Progress Made

  • Identify Students at Risk

    • Partnered with Institutional Research to disaggregate ACHA-NCHA-III survey data to identify which groups of students may need targeted outreach and/or support (Summer 2021).
    • Develop a Case Management position within the Division of Student Affairs to coordinate support for students and connect them to resources on and off campus (Fall 2021).

  • Provide Social Connectedness

    • Develop Mac Homeroom program for First Year students via Student Affairs.
    • Launch Sophomore Start-Up program via OSLE (August 2021).
    • Mac Project Corps via Career Exploration

     

  • Develop Life Skills

    • Provide adulting classes (OSLE and Alumni Engagement)
    • Hamre’s supports students’ ability to navigate the complex US healthcare system, including utilizing insurance, knowing what to expect at health appointments, advocating for their own best health and collaborating with healthcare providers in shared decision making.

  • Follow Crisis Management Procedures

    • Provide trauma-informed training for student leaders, staff, and faculty (ongoing)
    • Trauma-informed training for campus first responders as part of Department of Justice Office of Violence Against Women grant (Academic Year 2022-2023)

  • Provide Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services

    • Developed counseling positions focused on supporting BIPOC and students with other marginalized identities (Summer-Fall 2020)
    • Conducted (Spring 2021) and analyzed (Summer 2021) ACHA-NCHA-III survey, which has extensive items related to alcohol and other drugs.
    • Implemented Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) and -Motivational Interviewing for Cannabis as policy violations. (Fall 2021).
    • Formation of an Alcohol and Other Drug advisory group (Spring 2022).
    • Offering education related to the science of cannabis for key campus partners (Spring 2022).

  • Increase Help Seeking Behaviors

    • Collaborated with MCSG to develop the “Request Counseling Appointment Button” to allow students to more easily schedule counseling appointments (Fall 2020).

  • Restrict Access to Potentially Lethal Means

    • Subcommittee performing an environmental scan and developing recommendations (November 2021-March 2022)
