Mental Health
We provide diagnosis and care of depression, anxiety, and other psychological concerns. We collaborate with the counseling staff and a part-time psychiatrist Dr. Vanessa Baca who specialize in areas such as stress management, depression, anxiety, eating problems and disordered eating, and substance abuse. They can also help you manage your mental health medication needs. Learn more about medication management.
Sexual Health – for all genders
The Hamre Center for Health and Wellness offers a range of sexual and reproductive health care options including physical and mental health care. Our goal is to provide care in a way that is as transparent and accessible as possible so that you feel safe, seen, and respected. We want to help you connect with the resources to make an informed decision and live a healthy lifestyle.

Preventive Visits and Chronic Illness Management
- Physical exams (including physicals for sports, travel, or work) – there is a charge for these visits the price is listed on our Hamre Center List of Charges (Google Doc) unless you are on the United Healthcare Student Resource (UHCSR) insurance offered by Macalester which will cover physical exams at no charge if performed at the Hamre Center.
- Prescription refills
- Chronic illness management (asthma, diabetes, allergies)
- The Hamre Center does not provide allergy shots
Care for Acute Illnesses and Injuries (not limited to this list)
- Infections (eye, ear, nose, throat, respiratory, skin, bladder, UTI)
- Abdominal problems
- Headaches
- Exercise, dance, or sports injuries
- Abrasions & burns
Procedures (charges may apply)
Please note there are charges associated with most procedures.
- Abscess incision and drainage
- Ear irrigation and wax removal
- Wart treatment
- Suture removal
Immunizations (charges may apply)
Please note there are out of pocket costs associated with most immunizations.
- Td/Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccine
- MMR vaccine
- Hepatitis A vaccine Hepatitis B vaccine
- HPV Vaccine (now indicated for all genders, 2 shot series)
- Influenza vaccine (during flu season)
- Meningitis (A and B) vaccine
- Mantoux (tuberculosis) skin test or IgRA blood test
Laboratory Tests (charges may apply)
If you have questions regarding whether a lab test is available or questions about cost, please contact a member of the Hamre Center staff.
Medication Management
Our providers can initiate and refill prescription medication at local pharmacies. If you are looking for a refill, please first contact your pharmacy to see if you have one available.
Services We Do Not Provide
- Medical imaging (X-Ray, CT, MRI). If a provider orders imaging, you will be referred off-campus.
- Allergy testing
- Certain immunizations for study away—please consult cdc.gov and then Health Services to learn what is recommended for your destination and what is available on-campus
- Outside lab orders
