    The Macalester Security Department is committed to assisting all members of the Macalester College Community in providing for their own safety and security. When you call for assistance, give your name, describe the situation and provide contact information. Security can also connect you with other campus response personnel.
  • Macalester EMS

    Macalester has certified student EMTs on call Thursday, Friday, and Sunday nights (9pm — 2 am) when school is in session.  They will respond to health-related emergencies via calls to Macalester Security or the RHD on duty.

In life-threatening situations or when someone’s immediate safety is a concern, Emergency Departments are best equipped to provide care. They are open 24 hours/day. Urgent Medical Care

Urgent care facilities are for situations that require urgent (same day) attention but aren’t emergencies. They are usually open sometime between 8am and 8pm, but please check websites below for each clinic’s specific hours. The following urgent care options are within network for the Macalester-offered UHCSR insurance plan, the list below are nearest to Macalester:  

  • Fairview Urgent Care (Highland Park location is 3.1 miles/about 5k from Macalester, an easy 15 minute bus ride)
  • Concentra Urgent Care (multiple locations, closest is 1.8 miles/ about 2.8k from Macalester, an easy 10 min bus ride)

Telehealth

All students have 24/7 access to medical advice through HealthiestYou, a national telehealth service. HealthiestYou also provides telecounseling. Visit HealthiestYou to talk with a clinician who can help with minor illness or injury, or to be connected to a counselor. If you are insured with the Macalester-offered United Student Healthcare Resources (UHCSR) plan, there is no fee for this service.  Students who have private insurance (via family or individual plan) that is not the Macalester-offered UHCSR will have a fee. Please reach out to Healthiest You to determine what the cost will be based on insurance coverage.

Another community medical resource is Virtuwell. The cost is $49 and they will submit to your insurance.

Nurse Care Lines

  • Access Nurse: A nurse triage phone line that is free to all Macalester students.  It is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Access Nurse can be reached by calling the Hamre Center (651-696-6275) and selecting option 3 on the voice mail message. If you call during office hours and reach a staff member, simply asked to be connected to the nurse line. This is a great place to start if you don’t feel well and aren’t sure what to do. Access Nurse is familiar with emergency referral resources in the area and will provide the Hamre Center with a report of the call. You can either share your name when you call or can remain anonymous.
  • Most insurance companies offer a nurse care line option – check on the back of your insurance card for the telephone number. You can usually talk with a provider who can help determine if you should seek immediate medical care.

Urgent Mental Health Care

These are resources for situations that require in the moment or same day response but don’t require emergency care. *In very specific instances of a clear concern of an in-progress or imminent suicide, crisis resources may need to contact an emergency service.*

  • Press 2: 24/7/365 Urgent Mental Health Support
    For urgent mental health support, call the Hamre Center for Health & Wellness phone number (651.696.6275) then press option 2 when prompted, and you will be connected to a trained professional at ProtoCall, a phone counseling service that Macalester provides for students.  If it is during business hours, the front staff may answer the phone. In that case, please ask the front staff to connect you with “Press 2.”  
  • Urgent Care for Adult Mental Health
    24 hour/7 day crisis phone support and mobile crisis teams and walk-in services available. See their website for times and locations.

  • Steve Fund: Support for BIPOC
    Text STEVE to 741-741to access a culturally trained crisis text line counselor live. The Fund views text messaging as a key component of its strategy towards addressing the unmet mental health needs of college and university students of color.​ Through its partnership with the Crisis Text Line, the Fund promotes text messaging as a means to improve the critically needed access for young people of color to crisis counseling.
  • TREVOR Project: Support for LGBTQIA+ Individuals
    Chat via their website above, Call 1-866-488-7386, or Text “START” to 478-478 from anywhere in the U.S. 24/7/365 day. Get immediate crisis support by trained counselors that understand the challenges LGBTQ young people face. They will listen without judgment. All of your conversations are free and confidential, and you can share as much or as little as you’d like.
  • Trans Lifeline: Radical Trans Community Care
    Call 1-877-565-8860 Monday – Friday from 12:00PM-8:00PM Central Time, from anywhere in the U.S. Trans Lifeline’s Hotline is a peer support phone service run by trans people for our trans and questioning peers. Call us if you need someone trans to talk to, even if you’re not in a crisis or if you’re not sure you’re trans.
  • THRIVE Lifeline 
    Text “THRIVE” to 313.662.8209 to begin your conversation 24/7/365, from anywhere. THRIVE Lifeline is a 501(c)(3) grassroots organization dedicated to changing the landscape of mental health support for people with intersecting marginalized identities. They run a 24/7 non-carceral text-based crisis line to help those within communities feel heard, find affirming support, and stay alive. They can support people through escalated crisis and are also happy to hold conversations about identity, marginalization, or other less acute experiences that someone may want to talk about. The responders all hold marginalized identities and have lived experience with surviving suicide and trauma, familial rejection due to identity, food and housing insecurity, poverty, lack of access to education, immigration, and more. The team is majority LGBTQIA2S+, BIPOC, and disabled (and often lives at the intersections of these identities).

    Provides services to victims of sexual assault, including 24 hour phone support, hospital outreach, advocacy, individual counseling, and referral.
