As media and technology continue to transform our everyday lives, it is important to think through the human and more-than-human ways that we use and design technology. This course will provide a space for students to explore how and why technology and justice continue to depend on one another. Algorithms, bots, and biometric surveillance technology are quite literally in the palms of our students' hands, yet the implications of these technologies are not always evident (or are intentionally obfuscated). ChatGPT was released with great fanfare but few people know the technology behind ChatGPT came at a huge personal cost to laborers in Kenya earning about $2 an hour to make it less toxic. Our exploration of everything from the use of AI to extract information from documents, to the bias inherent in controlled vocabularies, surveillance systems and classification systems, imparts critical knowledge through an exploration of the ethical implications of everyday systems. Students in this class will engage with readings and various media related to critical digital race studies and examine how these technologies often end up perpetuating oppressive structures and harming vulnerable and minority populations. We believe that introducing students to the intersection of data and technology studies, Black feminisms, and computing will simultaneously seed stronger critical thinking skills in future technologists from the fields of Computer Science, Media and Cultural Studies, and the Information Sciences.

Have you ever played a game using the Nintendo Wii remote, Xbox Kinect, or Sony Move? Have you used augmented reality mobile apps like Pokemon Go or ones that identify stars and planets that you point the device towards? What about tilting a mobile device to change from portrait to landscape mode? All of these examples represent 3D user interfaces that allow a user to interact with computers in 3D space using physical gestures or tracked controllers. This course introduces how to interact in extended reality (XR) using virtual and augmented reality displays and 3D user interfaces. We will focus on creative applications like 3D sketching, including design metaphors, tracking technology, interfaces for selecting and manipulating 3D objects, traveling and wayfinding to get from one real or virtual place to another, and system control and symbolic input such as menus and text. Along the way, you will study the design and implementation of algorithms and programs and how to represent information with a computer. This course serves students who might envision focusing on computer science in college and students who wish to have solid computing skills to support work in another field. Only basic high school math (through algebra and trigonometry) is required as a prerequisite. Nonetheless, even if you have extensive experience with computer science or programming (including advanced placement or similar) you may find new and challenging material in this course because of its emphasis on applications, user interaction, and extended reality.

Why do people create different programming languages? What characteristics do languages have in common? What design decisions differentiate them, and what tradeoffs motivate those decisions? How do languages affect the style of code we write, our development processes, and the ways we think about software? In this course, we will examine a wide variety of programming languages, many briefly and a few in depth. We will compare how they approach topics such as type systems, abstraction, composition, state and mutability, access control, flow control, function dispatch, closures, metaprogramming, concurrency, memory management, compilation, and runtime environment. An introduction to techniques for working with natural (i.e., human) language, focusing on natural language text. We will focus on understanding the challenges inherent in working with language data, drawing from research on language from linguistics and related fields, and survey techniques that can be used to overcome those challenges. Such techniques may include: n-gram modeling, parsing, word vector embeddings, neural network architectures, model evaluation & interpretability, and the social and societal impacts of NLP, etc. Throughout, we’ll discuss application areas, which may include: language modeling, machine translation, sentiment analysis, text summarization, etc., as well as applications of these tools to questions elsewhere in the sciences and humanities. Parts of this course will give you hands-on experience implementing NLP models in Python using standard machine learning libraries, and thus familiarity with Python is expected. Many current computational challenges, such as Internet search, protein folding, and data mining require the use of multiple processes running in parallel, whether on a single multiprocessor machine (parallel processing) or on multiple machines connected together on a network (distributed processing). The type of processing required to solve such problems in adequate amounts of time involves dividing the program and/or problem space into parts that can run simultaneously on many processors. In this course we will explore the various computer architectures used for this purpose and the issues involved with programming parallel solutions in such environments. Students will examine several types of problems that can benefit from parallel or distributed solutions and develop their own solutions for them. This course counts as the capstone. In response, the field of Network Science has arisen, bringing together mathematics, computer science, sociology, biology, economics and other fields. This course will introduce computability topics including regular expressions, grammars and parsing, automata, nondeterminism, and NP completeness. There are no limitations on topic or technology; on the contrary, students are responsible for imagining possibilities, articulating goals, and researching and selecting suitable technologies. The format resembles a studio art class, with in-class discussion guided by sharing and critiquing classmates' ongoing work. This course examines the theoretical foundations of computation. It explores different mathematical models that try to formalize our informal notion of an algorithm. Models include finite automata, regular expressions, grammars, and Turing machines. The course also discusses ideas about what can and cannot be computed. In addition, the course explores the basics of complexity theory, examining broad categories of problems and their algorithms, and their efficiency. From doors we can't figure out how to open to websites we can't figure out how to navigate, we've all encountered counter-intuitive designs. So how do we create design systems that inspire joy instead of frustration? And how do we ensure that we design for everyone, including people who may be very different from ourselves? This course will teach techniques to improve our design of user interfaces, by centering the human in the design process. It will provide an introduction to the field of human-computer interaction and the design and evaluation of user interfaces. Students will learn methods for designing and prototyping interactive systems and some of the principles of creating good design based on human cognition. The class will be a mix of lectures, in-class activities and design critiques. The central focus of the course is a group project, in which students will formulate a design problem, explore potential design opportunities and tradeoffs, and iteratively evaluate and improve upon a digital prototype of their design. This course examines the language of social media through the lens of computational linguistics and natural language processing (NLP) techniques. Key topics include language variation within online communities, hate speech detection, misinformation identification, topic modeling, and the fairness and trustworthiness of language models. Designed for students interested in computational linguistics, NLP, and computational social science, this course emphasizes engagement with recent academic papers on social media language analysis. Students will critically discuss these papers and gain hands-on experience replicating their methodologies using Python libraries. By the end of the course, students will be expected to develop their own research project focused on studying social media language. Proficiency in Python programming is required for this course. This course introduces technologies for building dynamic web applications. It will look at all stages in the web application design process, including: 1) the basic protocols and technologies underlying the web (e.g. HTTP, REST), 2) front-end web technologies, such as HTML, CSS, and Javascript, 3) and application servers that manage requests for information, update data, etc. The course will be programming-intensive, with students using web frameworks to design and implement Internet applications. The format of the course will be mainly laboratory-based sessions, where students learn components of a web application, supported by lectures and discussions. Students will research particular topics and present their findings during these discussion sessions. The course will also investigate the usability of designs from a human factors standpoint and discuss privacy and other social consequences of this technology. This course counts as the capstone. Prerequisite(s): COMP 225 or permission of instructor.

This course will investigate the theory and practice of computer graphics programming using C++ and OpenGL. Through hands-on projects, supported by lecture and discussion, you will learn the fundamentals of creating interactive 2D and 3D images with applications in art, design, games, movies, science, and medicine. Topics covered will include event loops, polygonal models, rendering techniques, texturing, lighting, interaction techniques, and virtual reality. This course counts as the capstone.
