Student Opportunities

Competitions and Problem Solving

Macalester has a long tradition of participation and success in competitions for Mathematics, Applied Math, and Computer Science.  The Competitions & Problem Solving page lists competitions students participate in, and how to get involved.

Internships

Macalester’s location in the Twin Cities provides many opportunities for internships both during the semester and during the summer.  Students also complete internships at companies around the country over the summer.

Current internships are listed on the MSCS department home page.

Study Abroad

MSCS students do study abroad, both in programs that relate to MSCS fields, and in programs that involve no math, statistics, or computer science. Students interested in study abroad should discuss this with their advisors early on, so that college and major requirements are taken care of either through the program or around it.

Mac Research Opportunities

Many MSCS students work with faculty on research both during the school year and over the summer. Summer research typically lasts 10 weeks and involves intensive work on a faculty member’s research program.

Summer Opportunities Off Campus

Beyond Macalester’s campus, there are many opportunities for interesting and productive summer work. These include off-campus research opportunities, like REUs, summer workshops and camps, internships, and work teaching at MSCS-related camps for younger students.
