Ethnomusicology
Studying and Performing World Music in the Twin Cities
Welcome to the class website of ANTH-/MUSI-494: Ethnomusicology, offered in fall 2010 at Macalester College by Chuen-Fung Wong. The class introduces students to the field of ethnomusicology—broadly defined as the cultural study of music. Most students are Music or Anthropology majors. Apart from writing, reading, and class discussion, students also develop laboratory skills of transcription, analysis, and audiovisual recording, leading to an individual ethnographic project conducted in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.
