The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs recognized Macalester College for being one of the colleges and universities with the highest number of students selected for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Fulbright Top Producing Institutions such as Macalester value global connection and support members of their campus communities across the United States to pursue international opportunities.
“Macalester’s tradition of being named a top producer of students for the Fulbright U.S. Student program is just one excellent example of our community’s longstanding commitment to making the world a better place,” said President Suzanne Rivera. “The cultural exchange that the program fosters takes on even more importance in our rapidly changing world, and we’re proud that our students continue to seek knowledge and build relationships in cultures different from their own.”
The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international academic exchange program. Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided over 400,000 talented and accomplished students, scholars, teachers, artists, and professionals of all backgrounds with the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research abroad. Fulbrighters exchange ideas, build people-to-people connections, and work to address complex global challenges.
Dr. Brigetta Abel, director of writing and the MAX Center, supports applicants as the college’s Fulbright fellowship advisor.
“We are incredibly proud of our students who pursue Fulbright opportunities. Internationalism is at the heart of Macalester’s values and mission, and the Fulbright award embodies that spirit: our Fulbrighters gain valuable insights into different cultures, develop lifelong connections across the globe, and return with a broadened perspective that will allow them to make change in the world,” said Dr. Abel. “Because I, too, have experienced the life-changing effect of a Fulbright year, I encourage all eligible students to take advantage of the resources and mentorship available through our campus fellowship advising program and to apply.”
Fulbright is a program of the US Department of State, with funding provided by the US Government. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations, and foundations around the world also provide direct and indirect support to the program.
Fulbright alumni work to make a positive impact on their communities, sectors, and the world and have included forty-five heads of state or government, sixty-two Nobel Laureates, ninety Pulitzer Prize winners, eighty-two MacArthur Fellows, and countless leaders and changemakers who build mutual understanding between the people of the United State and the people of other countries.
