The Club Sports program at Macalester College is designed to provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a variety of sport activities not offered on the varsity level at the college. A club sport is student initiated, organized and run by Macalester students who share a common interest in specific sports activity. These activities are competitive in nature and typically involve several practices a week and competitions against other college club teams. Club sports teams currently offered at Macalester include: Crew, Ice Hockey, Nordic Skiing, Rugby, Ultimate Frisbee, Water Polo, Lacrosse, Tennis, Wrestling, Quadball and Volleyball. For more information on club sports visit the Club Sports website. Recreational activities and competitive sports are a valuable part of a liberal arts education. These physical activities are part of a life-long learning process and complement the academic and artistic knowledge gained at Macalester. The intramural program desires to provide activities of interest to the Macalester Community. The goal is for every individual to participate in an activity of one’s choosing in so far as facilities and equipment permits. Intramural activities are organized on a team and individual basis, as well as recreational and competitive levels, enabling all to participate. Ability is not a primary concern; all you need is desire. For more information on intramural activities at Macalester, visit the Macalester Athletics website. Firmly grounded in the spirit of the liberal arts, the arts departments at Macalester College provide world-class learning experiences in dance, the fine arts, music, and theater. The Music, Art and Art History, and Theater and Dance departments welcome students at all levels of expertise, offering a wide range of studio and academic courses, as well as varied performance and showing opportunities. The Macalester Music Department offers courses and performance opportunities in Western concert music, jazz, pop, African music, Asian music, Scottish piping, early music, electronic music, and other musical traditions. Individual instruction at all levels and musical ensembles by audition are available for all interested students. Students may major or minor in music. The Music Department at Macalester College aims both to celebrate music as a source of beauty and an agent for positive change and to interrogate music from critical perspectives that reveal its powerful and direct social influences. In lessons and ensembles in various traditions (Western art music, African music, Jazz, Scottish Highland, and various folk and popular musics of the world), we train students in the practical arts of music-making, with regular opportunities for recital participation, ensemble tours, master classes, and interaction with guest artists. In our varied curricular offerings, we place music within the broader context of the liberal arts, leading students to a deeper appreciation of music’s social and political status across time and space. Graduates of Macalester’s Music Department find themselves well poised to pursue graduate study at the nation’s top music schools, whether it be as performers or in an academic fields such as musicology, ethnomusicology, composition, and music theory. Other participants of the program, from the most committed to the most casual, leave Macalester’s Music Department enriched by their experiences making music and thinking more imaginatively about the many roles that music plays in their lives and in the world around them. Visit the Music department website to learn more about ensembles, audition schedules and additional opportunities. The Theater and Dance department offers small academic and studio courses in which students are closely mentored by expert faculty. We encourage students without previous experience to try a beginning course in acting, dance, design, or playwriting. With the exception of dance technique courses, THDA classes count for your Fine Arts requirements. The Theater and Dance Department prepares the next generation of performers, directors/choreographers, designers, researchers, technicians and playwrights. Macalester is in a privileged location for students interested in the arts, as the Twin Cities have the second highest number of theater companies per capita in the United States, after New York. Courses in Theater and Dance regularly bring students to on- and off-campus theater and dance productions. Here you will find nationally-recognized LORT theaters such as the Guthrie and exciting companies such as Penumbra Theatre, Mixed Blood, Jungle Theatre, and many more. You will learn the vocabularies of our disciplines, take master classes with guest artists, and become part of a vibrant arts community. Visit the Theater and Dance department website to learn more about class offerings, recent THDA graduates, and audition schedules. About Residential Life:

Biking is encouraged, but Macalester is a relatively small campus and riding your bike between your residence hall and classes is done infrequently. If you bring a bike, there are a number of racks on campus that can be used to secure your bicycle. Please remember to bring a U-lock to properly lock your bicycle. There is no indoor storage for bikes and Macalester does not assume liability for lost/stolen bikes. Please note that bicycles left on campus at the end of school year will be removed at the owner’s expense and donated.
All vehicles parked by Macalester College students, faculty, and staff in college parking lots must display a valid parking permit. First-year resident students are NOT eligible for a campus parking permit. Medical and work-related exceptions may be requested from the Director of Public Safety. Registration is not transferable. Parking permits are issued to Macalester faculty, staff, and eligible current students by registering online.

The HOURCAR program currently serves Macalester College and the Mac-Groveland community. HOURCAR vehicles are located in the parking lot on Grand Avenue across from Patagonia and near the George Draper Dayton Hall. Members also have access to all automobiles in the HOURCAR fleet. Using the car is simple: drivers reserve a time online, use the HOURCAR, and then return it to the reserved parking space. Drivers pay for time and mileage, but operational costs such as the cost of gas/charging, insurance ($1 million with a $500 deductible), and parking are all included.About the Center for Student Leadership and Engagement (CSLE):

The MacPass is your multi-use on-campus ID card. It’s used for identification, building access, using your Meal Plan, paying with Mac Money, printing and as a library card. Students must submit their MacPass photo before arriving on campus. Please follow the instructions in the New Student Portal to do so. The Laurie Hamre Center for Health and Wellness is located on the first floor of the Leonard Center. Here, students can make appointments for medical visits, as well as get referrals to outside doctors covered by Macalester health insurance for treatment that can’t be done on-site. The Hamre Center also offers counseling services both by appointment and via 24-hour crisis lines. More information about the Hamre Center and its services can be found on the Hamre Center website. Career Exploration helps all students explore a wide variety of options, design materials that translate their liberal arts experience, connect to those who may mentor them and launch them with confidence into the world. Career Exploration offers programs, services and appointments, wherever you are. Our office is powered by Handshake, our online recruiting system. On Handshake, you can find internship and full-time opportunities, register for career events, or schedule an appointment with any of our career counselors. Career Exploration services are available for life for Macalester Alumni! Our counselors provide tailored career exploration and preparation for students of all majors – and for those exploring them all. As always, make your appointment in Handshake. For quick career consultation, virtual “walk-in” appointments are available; check our website for hours. Visit the Career Exploration Website and explore the Virtual Resources and Support offered As part of Macalester’s commitment to our shared responsibility “to provide a supportive and respectful environment for students, staff, and faculty of all cultures and backgrounds”, we ask incoming students to participate an online module on Sexual Violence Prevention. Familiarity with the important information shared in the module is vital for all of our campus community members– understanding our shared values and definitions, building skills to contribute to a campus culture of sexual respect, and knowing the various resources available in the event you or a friend may need them. Macalester values these things enough to require participation by all of our incoming students. The course will include surveys to help personalize the experience and measure attitudes and behaviors. Macalester will only receive information about the first-year class as a whole and will never see individual student responses. The sexual violence prevention module can be found in your New Student Portal. Some, due to personal experience, may have concerns about completing this module. We understand that and want to provide some other options for learning about the support resources available to you and Macalester’s expectations for sexual respect. If you’d prefer to talk to a confidential staff member or receive this information in a written format, please contact Tiger Simpson, Director of Health and Promotion and Sexual Respect ([email protected]) to indicate your preference. Information about Title IX can be found on the Title IX page or by contacting Laura Creech, Title IX Coordinator, at [email protected]. The deadline to complete the online course is August 31st, 2024. At Macalester, we are committed to living and learning in community. This means sharing a commitment to the health and well-being of ourselves and others. It also means considering how our actions affect others as we work together to keep our community healthy and safer. The community impact of alcohol and other drug use is definitely a part of the conversation, even if you plan never to use any of these substances yourself. This is why Macalester requires all incoming students to take the AlcoholEdu for College online course. The course will include information to empower you in informed decision-making, as well as surveys to help personalize the experience and measure attitudes and behaviors. Macalester will only receive information about the first-year class as a whole and will never see individual student responses. The AlcoholEdu for College online course can be found in your New Student Portal. The deadline to complete the online course is August 31st, 2024.About MacPass:

The College generates an electronic Statement of Account for each student prior to the start of each semester and each month that the student has an account balance or activity. This statement comes in the form of an eBill. Each eBill statement (PDF) itemizes the student’s payment obligation to the College for that billing period. The statement will also itemize any credits applied to the student’s bill such as financial aid or payments received. The student is responsible for all charges regardless of whether financial aid, employers, or other third parties pay as agreed. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that all requirements of grantors, lenders, employers and other third party payers are met on a timely basis. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate billing information to all parties involved. To estimate the amount of Macalester charges that you and your family will be responsible for the 2024-2025 academic year, please use the Bill Estimating Worksheet. This worksheet, provided by the Financial Aid Office, is based on direct charges and does not consider indirect expenses for supplies, travel, and personal expenses. You will need to plan for these costs as well as the direct costs estimated above. Macalester College offers two payment plan options to its students. One is the Semester Payment Plan and the other is the Installment Payment Plan. Find more Payment Plan Option details on the Student Accounts Website. Authorized users must be set up by the student. Once set up, please go to the authorized user website to log in. As a parent, how do I view my student’s eBill statement and other billing information? Ask your student to set you up as an authorized user. As an authorized user, you may view the student’s eBill statement, billing account activity, and make online payments. Instructions for setting you up as an authorized user can be found at Student Accounts. How do I share the billing responsibility with my parents or other persons? Students may share the billing responsibility by setting up parents or other persons as authorized users to view their billing account information. To do so, students may log on to Macalester’s 1600grand student portal, click on Money Matters, below Student Billing Account/Information, click on View/Pay My Bill, click on Account Activity, click on the Authorized Users tab, and enter information as prompted. The authorized user will receive an email with login information which can be used to view account information, statements, and make payments. How can I get a paper copy of my statement? Students and authorized users may logon to view the student’s eBill statement (PDF) and click on the print option. Macalester College does not provide paper copies of statements. What are my payment options? Payments may be made with: When are the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semester payments due? Can I wait until I get to campus to pay my bill? Do not wait until you get to campus to pay your bill. The eBill statement and all information clearly states that the due date for Fall Semester is August 15th and the due date for Spring Semester is January 15th. I subtracted my charges from my Financial Aid and paid the difference. Why does my account still have a balance due? Some reasons for still having a balance due include changing your living arrangements, not subtracting the loan origination fee, including your work study award, intending to apply for a loan that has not yet been processed due to missing documents, pending scholarships, and possibly errors in calculating what is owed. We would be happy to help you determine why you still have a balance. Who do I contact if I have questions about the Financial Aid listed on my eBill statement? Please contact the Financial Aid Office regarding financial aid items listed on your statement or pertaining to your billing account information. Their contact information is: Phone: 651-696-6214 Email: [email protected] Website: www.macalester.edu/financialaid Why isn’t my full work study award applied to my account? While work study is a form of financial aid, the money must be earned. Students are given a specific dollar amount that they may earn each semester. Until the money is earned and applied to your account, you will not be given credit for it. If you would like to have your work study checks directly applied to your student account, you will need to provide the Student Accounts Office with a completed Student Check Authorization form. How are student employment earnings applied to student accounts? Students who work on campus may sign a Student Employment Check Authorization Form in the Student Accounts Office authorizing the college to automatically apply the work study earnings to your account. How do I know what to pay if I receive a new financial aid award? Take the total charges due, subtract the new aid award and pay the difference. Remember that work study is not a credit until it is earned, so it should not be included in your calculation. To help you in figuring out the new amount due, go to the Bill Estimating Worksheet. Do I have to pay for health insurance coverage if I have my own coverage? By default, all students are charged for the health insurance and are responsible for waiving out of the policy. Health insurance coverage is mandatory. You must waive out by the deadline of August 14, 2024, in order for the fees to be credited back to your student billing account. To waive out of the policy, go to the GallagherKoster website or contact the Center for Health and Wellness for more information. Once you are enrolled in the policy, you may not waive out. Where can I find out more information about room and board? Visit the Residential Life website for more information about room and board. Where can I find out more about health insurance? Visit the Laurie Hamre Center for Health and Wellness website for additional information about health insurance and billingNOTE: This section is only relevant to students who have been offered fall employment
