Research elsewhere
The National Science Foundation (NSF) funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where they work closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Physics students are also encouraged to consider REU Sites in related fields, including Materials Research, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Engineering, and Geosciences, which often have components of research of interest to physicists.
The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of the 17 participating DOE laboratories/facilities. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.
NASA Internships can take place at a NASA center, contractor facility, or anywhere activities are ongoing to advance NASA’s missions. The specific location of each NASA internship opportunity is included in its description. Applicants have the opportunity to browse and selectively apply for individual opportunities once their application is complete.
