Emma WestRasmus—2012 Fellow
Year: Class of 2013
Chuck Green Fellowship
As a recipient of this civic engagement summer fellowship, I have partnered with Children’s Dental Services, a non-profit dental clinic in Northeast Minneapolis that serves low-income families. I am implementing a program I designed to help Spanish-speaking families apply for Minnesota’s Medicaid programs.
Working in a clinical setting is a brand-new experience for me–I have usually been more involved with public policy and political activism, but this experience has made me realize that I want to go in to medicine in a clinical setting too. I am hoping to go to medical school or nursing/midwifery school, and to find ways to combat structural inequalities through access to health services and care.
Thank you so much for the chance to explore something brand-new…without this opportunity I might never had realized my newfound passion for clinical and policy healthcare work. Having a funding source was the only way I could have done this project and stayed in the Twin Cities this summer, and I feel so supported not just financially but in the civic engagement and socially-conscious work I am doing too
