This summer I worked with Juxtaposition Arts in North Minneapolis on their Pathways to College and Career program. Juxtaposition is a nonprofit social enterprise engaging the creativity of northside youth. They teach classes, employ artists, and provide an artistic hub for the community, with public art displays, galleries, and events for the neighborhood. My project has consisted of doing lots of research on college prep programs nationwide, and working with artists and administrators here at JXTA to shape a college prep program unlike any other, specific to the needs and visions of Juxtaposition youth and their communities.
During my time here, I’ve found myself tapping into a bottomless well of learning and growth on a daily basis. Having had the honor to work with one of the most inspiring organizations I’ve ever heard of, I have been touched by the ethics and integrity of JXTA. Most importantly, I think I have learned to not let the guilt of living comfortably within a world of injustice paralyze me from doing my best to support the amazing work I see being done around me. I think there is a place for empathetic and resourced individuals to come alongside efforts in under-resourced communities, and I’m animated by the prospect of coming to realize how I can ethically do so.
