Sankofa: Reflections Upon The Expanded Educational Opportunities Program and the Future of Diversity at Macalester
Upon this year’s 50th Anniversary of the Expanded Education Opportunity (EEO) Program,  join Macalester alumni to examine Macalester’s commitment to Multiculturalism, one of the distinguishing values of the college.  Hear from alumni whose experiences span the mid-60s to the EEO Program established in 1969, then through the various iterations of Minority Programs, to Macalester’s current efforts to promote and support Diversity and Inclusion.  Barbara Phillips ’71 will moderate this event with speakers Warren Simmons ’73, Shelley Carthen-Watson ’82, Michael Dueñes ’91, Myhana Kerr ’18, and Marjorie Trueblood, Dean of Multicultural Life.

1974 Watergate and 2019 Trump: Similarities, Differences, and the Implication for Democracy and America
45 years ago we experienced an unprecedented crisis with the resignation of, first, Spiro Agnew and then Richard Nixon. Investigations, runaway executive power, corruption, racial division, Vietnam — our country was in a tailspin. How does that compare to what America is going through now in the Age of Trump? What did we learn from the 70s and what lessons should we take away now? This panel features Peter Fenn ’70, faculty emeriti Chuck Green, Linda Kennedy ’72, and David List ’74.

Back to Class Lecture with Dan Keyser, Associate Professor of Theatre and Dance
Theatre Project from 1905 to Present
Longtime Resident Designer and Production Manager Dan Keyser will present “Theatre Project from 1905 to Present” which is a look at the Macalester College program through its productions. This project has two components. The first is a “Timeline of Productions” by decades and is the visual images of productions for each year–containing photos and programs. The second part is “The Theatre Archives,” which is a database of the material from the timeline with information on Show Titles, Directors, Designers, Stage Managers, Cast/Production Staff and more information for each year in the timeline. Learn a bit of the history of Theatre at Macalester, the project followed by an opportunity to explore the systems.

Legacies of the First World War
The First World War – referred to simply as “The Great War” by contemporaries who had no idea that it would be followed by an even more catastrophic Second World War a mere two decades later – set the stage for global political life in the twentieth century.  Indeed, it is impossible to understand the political, social, cultural and economic developments of the period stretching from 1918 until today without grasping the world-historical impact of the conflict unleashed by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914 (one hundred years ago this past summer).  In this session, we explore the consequences of the First World War.

January 2019 marked the completion of the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center renovation, with the opening of the Theater and Dance building – the third and final phase of the project. Come learn more about the newly finished state-of-the-art performance, rehearsal, and classroom spaces and how students are already making it their own.

President Brian Rosenberg will moderate a conversation with Tonderai Chikuhwa ’96, Linnea van Wagenen ’07, and Kofi Amoo-Gottfried ’01, alumni whose personal and professional lives have been inspired by his example. Join your class of ’69  SWAP participants for a chance to tell our stories from the time when we had the opportunity to spend three months in Europe thanks to Macalester’s amazing program called SWAP.  It will be a chance to share where you worked, who you worked and traveled with, the job you had, and a funny, serious, or “scary” story, how you were affected by the experience, whatever you would like to share. Those traveling with SWAPPERS that summer are welcome.

Alumni of Color Intergenerational Conversation
In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Expanding Educational Opportunities (EEO) program, Macalester College will commission a public artwork to commemorate the progress and look to the future for students of color on campus and the alumni who paved the way.  This journey is different to every individual and has taken many forms over the course of Macalester’s history. Jason Jackson, director of the Lealtad-Suzuki Center will lead a discussion with alumni of color to understand what stories and themes have been important in the work of diversity at Macalester as we continue to pursue this goal.
