Accelerated Intermediate Spanish meets the goals of Intermediate Spanish I (SPAN 203 ) and Intermediate Spanish II (SPAN 204) in one semester. It extends and deepens awareness and use of linguistic functions in Spanish, and it introduces the history and culture of Hispanophone countries.  This course is designed for students who have successfully completed SPAN 102 or SPAN 110, or have tested in at the intermediate level on the placement test. Three class hours per week plus two hours of tutorial. Successful completion with a minimum grade of C- allows enrollment in SPAN 305. Prerequisite(s): SPAN 102 or SPAN 110 or an equivalent earned with a minimum grade of C-, and permission of instructor. Students will not receive credit for this course if they have previously taken or been awarded credit for SPAN 203 and/or SPAN 204.

Don Quijote as Timeless Text immerses students in the universe of Miguel de Cervantes’ immortal novel, published in two parts in 1605 and 1615. Through critical analyses of each and every chapter, the course will highlight the significance of an emblematic work of fiction which transcends cultural boundaries. Class format will combine explanations by the professor with group or individual presentations. Rather than aim at specific goals, we will travel through the pages of the novel much like Don Quixote and Sancho Panza ride across the region of La Mancha: at random, with no specific destination, always in search of adventures that may come when least expected. While Don Quijote has remained at the center of the Spanish canon for more than 400 years, it is also, and perhaps essentially, a piece of entertainment in the highest sense of the word. Let us enjoy the text without limitations, keeping in mind that reading for pleasure is a hallmark of our human condition. This course satisfies the Area 1 requirement for the Spanish major. In this course, students will learn to critically read literary and cultural works from Latin America throughout the 20th century. They will also learn to contextualize the writing of these texts against the backdrop of historical, political, and societal struggles in the region. We will study methods and strategies for analyzing a diverse range of short stories from all over the Spanish-speaking countries in the Americas from the perspectives of literature, art, media, and popular culture. Our class discussion will highlight aspects of the texts' style, form, and language, exploring how these elements contribute to their artistic and rhetorical value. This course offers a comprehensive exploration of contemporary filmmaking in Abya Yala, a term that reclaims the Indigenous identities and knowledges of the territories known as the Americas. Through an examination of 21st century feature films and documentaries, we will discuss how both Indigenous and non-Indigenous directors use cinema to portray the history of colonial violence, its lasting legacies, and the ongoing struggle for indigenous sovereignty in Abya Yala/Latin America. Recognizing the ethical complexities inherent in filmmaking, in this course we will critically analyze the representation of Indigenous identities, collaborations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous creators, and the rise of Indigenous-led film production. Along with film screenings and in-class discussions, students will elaborate a video essay to deepen their understanding of the politics of representation in Abya Yala/Latin American cinema, and explore the region’s ongoing struggle for Indigenous rights and self-determination. The senior seminar is a capstone course that explores in depth a shifting field of topics. This course is designed for heritage learners of Spanish: those who grew up speaking Spanish at home, with extended families and in their communities. These students are comfortable speaking Spanish, but their literacy in it was not necessarily developed by formal schooling. Leaning on all of their previous experience with the language, the course seeks to enrich and complement the students' linguistic repertoire by further developing their communicative abilities, both verbal and written, especially in an academic context. Class content will focus on Latin America and the U.S. Latinx population. Students will gain increased confidence in the language and will strengthen their identity as bilinguals and abilities to interact with a more diverse group of speakers, pursue higher-level courses and/or apply this knowledge in their professional endeavors, inside or outside the United States. This course is the equivalent to SPAN 305 for those interested in the Spanish major or minor. (Students cannot earn credit for both 305 and 306). In this course, students will examine the different varieties of Spanish in the US and the effects of the linguistic contact between Spanish and English. Sociolinguistic aspects relevant to language contact will be addressed, as will related issues such as immigration patterns, bilingualism, Spanglish, and bilingual education. The course focuses on the critical analysis of national stereotypes in literature and in other forms of cultural representation known in many languages as Imagology. The course examines the role that textual artifacts have played in shaping the modern image of the Hispanic nations. These texts are sometimes canonical, highbrow manifestations such as novels, poems, or essays. More often though, they are stereotypes or symbols ingrained in the collective psyche of both the Hispanic and the non-Hispanic people: "toreros," "gitanas," "gauchos/as," "guitarras," "sombreros," "flamenco," "samba," "salsa," "fútbol," and many more. As cultural myths, their representational power has proven to be incredibly enduring beyond the time of their formation. This course satisfies the Area 2 requirement for the Spanish major. From the Amazon to Patagonia, the expansion of South American nations in the 19th century relied on the acculturation, displacement, and extermination of native populations. Despite their high degree of violence, collective traumas such as the Selknam genocide (Chile), "the conquest of the desert" (Argentina) and "the Putumayo atrocities" (Colombia-Peru) remain in the margins of the cultural memory of the region more than a century later after the events. How do survivors, activists, and artists confront the legacies of colonialism? What forms of reparation are appropriate in the present? From novels to films and documentaries, the cultural works that we will analyze in this course will help us not only to understand what these traumatic episodes mean today for the indigenous populations of the Amazon and Patagonia, but also to interrogate the limits and contradictions of any act of memory. Why do we laugh? Do we laugh with friends, strangers, or alone? How long does the magic of a joke last? When does a jest become bland or even offensive? This course invites students to reflect on our sense of humor by reading short stories, novellas, poems, and comedias written by Spanish and colonial American authors in the 16th and 17th centuries—a period known as the Golden Age when humor was cultivated as part of wit. We will examine the multiple meanings of laughter, uncovering its literary mechanisms (caricature, parody, irony, satire) and its conditions (tacit social hierarchy and discrimination). We will explore how laughter can reinforce stereotypes, challenge power, and build community. Students are encouraged to bring their own experiences with sitcoms, stand-up comedy, and TikTok shorts into class discussions and projects. This course satisfies the Area 1 requirement of the Spanish major. Prerequisite: SPAN 307 or consent of the instructor.
