Longer Term Research Programs

Research projects spanning summer and academic year

Macalester offers multiple programs that enable students to deeply engage with a research project for a longer period of time (see below). In addition to these unique programs, students should also consider Independent Study and participation in an Honors Projects as mechanisms to continue their scholarly work during an academic semester.

Political Science

Chuck Green Fellowship

During the six-month fellowship, fellows participate in a spring semester Political Science seminar focused on analyzing and addressing community-based issues. That summer, fellows receive a stipend to complete a full-time, on-site project at a community-based organization to implement the recommendations developed in the spring.

Only 12 fellows—who must be either sophomores or juniors—are selected each year.

Humanities, Social Sciences, and Fine Arts

Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF)

Established in 1988 by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program aims to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups, and others with a demonstrated commitment to eradicating racial disparities, who will pursue a Ph.D. and enter the professoriate in selected core fields. Each year Macalester College selects up to five talented sophomores to participate in the two-year program, beginning in junior year.

MMUF designated core fields are: Anthropology, Area/Cultural/Ethnic/Gender Studies, Art History, Classics, Geography and Population Studies, English Language & Literature, Cinema and Media Studies, Musicology, Ethnomusicology and Music Theory, Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, Linguistics, Performance Studies & Theater (theoretical focus), Philosophy, Religion, Sociology.

Chemistry and Biology

Beckman Scholars Program

The Beckman Scholars Program at Macalester College enables Beckman Scholars to conduct research with a Macalester faculty member for a continuous 15-month period of time, spanning two summers and one academic-year. The most recent award from the Arnold & Mabel Beckman Foundation was for a Beckman Scholars Program extending from 2022–2025. At this time, there is no funding for new Beckman Scholars.
