Macalester-Sponsored Scholarships

  • Ella Bandes Scholarship

    Summary:

    IAU College, with study abroad programs in Aix-en-Province, France, is proud to offer the Ella Bandes Scholarship Program for qualified Macalester students interested in either a semester or summer abroad in the Core Arts Program at IAU College’s Marchutz School of Fine Arts.

    The scholarship was created in memory of Ella Bandes, a former Macalester and IAU Marchutz School of Fine Arts student.  

    Each year, qualified Macalester students enrolled full-time in IAU’s Marchutz Painting and Drawing Program can apply for one of two individual semester scholarships or one summer scholarship.

    This scholarship is administrated by Macalester’s Art and Art History department.

    Award Amount:
    $5,000/semester
    $3,000/summer

    –Acceptance into the IAU Marchutz program
    –Demonstrated financial need

  • Jack C. and Dorothy DeSimone Pitts Endowment for Study Abroad

    Summary:
    In honor of Jack C. and Dorothy D. Pitts, Janet Pitts Beckman, in collaboration with Macalester, has established the Jack C. and Dorothy DeSimone Pitts Endowment for Study Abroad to support qualified Macalester students.

    This scholarship is intended to support undergraduate study abroad in the social sciences and humanities. Funds can be used to cover any costs directly incurred from participation in the semester of study away, including but not limited to: room, board, tuition, travel, visa, books.

    The scholarship is administered through Study Away in collaboration with the Financial Aid Office and the program sponsor.

    Award Amount:
    $750-$3,000, depending on funds available and number of applicants

    Eligibility:
    –Students must be enrolled in a Macalester approved study away semester program that offers direct enrollment in a foreign university where content courses are not taught in English (students will need the relevant foreign language proficiency) AND students must take at least one of those content courses not taught in English offered through direct enrollment at a foreign university.

    –Content courses cannot be language-learning courses; they must be in a subject other than language.

    Examples: Mac German Program – taking European Society course in German at the University of Vienna; IES Madrid – taking Political & Social History of Spain & Spanish America in Spanish at Universidad Complutense de Madrid

  • Kay Thomas Fund Scholarship

    Summary:
    Established by Kay A. Thomas, ’63, the Thomas IGC Fund supports the Institute for Global Citizenship and may be used to strengthen and expand existing programs and explore new initiatives that align with the mission and scope of the IGC.

    This scholarship is currently offered in support of students who wish to pursue international academic activities during the summer, whether via study away programs, internships, language study, research, etc.

    Award Amount:
    Award amounts are determined based on financial need and estimated expenses. Awards may not cover the cost of all anticipated expenses incurred while abroad, but may act as a considerable financial offset.

    Eligibility:
    –Participation in an international intellectual pursuit during the summer
    –Priority is given to students who otherwise would not have the opportunity to study abroad during their enrollment at Macalester
    –Students graduating in May are not eligible to apply for the summer following their graduation.
    –Demonstrated financial need

    Application & Deadlines:

    Submit:
    Description of the international academic activity (program, language school, internship, research focus, etc.), including location and dates of travel
    –Overall expected expenses, and specifically those for which you are applying for funding
    Short essay detailing the intended experience, what you hope to gain from it, how it will contribute to accomplishing personal, academic and/or professional goals, and how this scholarship will help you achieve those goals.
    –You will also be asked to describe if/how your summer pursuit may be your best (or only) undergraduate international academic opportunity.

    –Deadlines vary per year, but are typically in the month of April

  • American Councils for International Education

    Summary:
    American Councils strengthens international ties and mutual understanding through excellence in academic, professional and cultural exchange, language acquisition, educational development, and research. Their study abroad programs award scholarships to traditionally underrepresented students, and also offer assistance funds to support the incidental costs of studying abroad, such as applying for a passport and pre-program medical appointments.

  • American University in Cairo

    Summary:
    AUC offers financial assistance to study abroad students, who are visiting AUC from their home institutions, as well as international non-degree students who enroll in AUC courses but are not currently pursuing a degree.

    AU Cairo Funding

    Award Amount:
    $2,500 – $5,000/semester

    Summary: 

    AMIDEAST Education Abroad Programs in the MENA is committed to providing financial assistance to students enrolled in our programs. Awards will be made only to students who submit a completed scholarship application and a complete program application by the established deadlines. Students will be notified whether they received an Amideast scholarship within one month of the application deadline.

    Summary: 

    The scholarship is need-based, and aims to support broader access to study abroad opportunities through Carleton College’s Global Engagement Programs.

    Summary: 

    The CEPA Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that engages in philanthropic work with families in the developing world in addition to achieving its mission in facilitating international exchange and global learning.

    Summary:
    CET awards $400,000 in scholarship awards each year and supports the Fund for Education Abroad to ensure financial need is not a barrier to study abroad. Most CET scholarship decisions are based on financial need, and scholarship awards are intended to encourage study abroad by helping to alleviate financial burden.

    Summary:
    CIEE has made it their mission to help every student who wants to study abroad have access to this life-changing experience. Toward this end, they offer more than $8 million dollars every year in a range of college study abroad scholarships and grants.

    Summary:
    As a non-profit study abroad institution, CYA aims to help as many students as possible to find options for financial assistance. Eligibility for their scholarships is based on financial need. Only students who have been accepted to CYA for a semester or academic year are eligible to apply.

    Summary:
    DIS offers need- and merit-based awards and is committed to supporting students with limited financial resources, from diverse backgrounds,  and/or underrepresented populations in study abroad. On average, over 50% of all students receive financial support from DIS.

    Summary:
    The Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome (ICCS) was established in 1965 and provides undergraduate students with an opportunity in Rome to study ancient history, archaeology, Greek and Latin literature, Italian language, and ancient art.

    Summary:
    IAU is committed to making studying abroad a reality for students who otherwise may not have the opportunity. Through a robust offering of merit scholarships, grants, and need-based assistance for its semester, summer, and J-Term students, IAU is a leader in the industry when it comes to breaking down the cost barrier.

    Summary:
    IES Abroad commits $5 million in study abroad scholarships and financial aid. All students must be approved for an IES Abroad program to receive these awards. You will be considered for all funding when you submit an aid application, with the exception of the Disability Grant, which requires a separate application.

    Summary:

    Summary:
    The Cason Scholarship Award is in memory of Jeffrey W. Cason who served as Dean of International Programs at Middlebury College for nine years. This scholarship is in recognition of his lifelong passion for international teaching, learning, and study abroad. A limited number of students from colleges and universities other than Middlebury will be granted scholarships of $3,000 every semester.

    Summary:
    SRAS offers Program Grants to Study Abroad that can help offset program costs. Students are able to apply for these after beginning their SRAS study abroad program application.

  • SRISA: Santa Reparata International School of Art

    Summary:

    The Learning Abroad Center’s Study Abroad Scholarship provides awards for Non-University of Minnesota undergraduate students going on eligible Learning Abroad Center credit-bearing programs. This scholarship is intended to:

  • Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship

    Summary:
    The Gilman Scholarship is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and offers funding for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad. The program provides awards of up to $5,000 to study abroad for U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving a Pell Grant.

  • Boren Awards

    Summary:
    Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Preference is given to geographic areas, languages and fields of study that are critical to US interests and underrepresented in study abroad. The Boren committee prefers applications for 6-12 months of study.

  • Center for Khmer Students: Junior Residents Fellow Program

    Summary:
    The Center for Khmer Studies offers a six-week junior fellowship program in Cambodia for US, Cambodian, and French students. The program is only open to students with US, French, or Cambodian citizenship. Fellows will have the opportunity to learn about contemporary Cambodian history in the classroom, as well as engage in field trips to historical and cultural sites.

    CKS Program

    Award Amount:
    CKS covers the cost of tuition, accommodation (bed and breakfast), local transportation during program activities, books, study materials, and some field trip expenses, such as entrance fees to historical and cultural sites. All other costs are incurred by Fellows.

    Basic Eligibility:
    –US, French, and Cambodian citizens
    –Undergraduate students and recent graduates
    –Students with a good grasp of spoken and written English
    –Students who are fully vaccinated and healthy for traveling

    Summary:
    The Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation is dedicated to preserving the memory of Corinne Schillings by providing a living legacy through education, specifically supporting undergraduate college women in the study of languages and learning about other cultures.

    –Must have received Silver or Gold Award in Girl Scouts and provide proof
    –Cumulative grade point is at least a B

  • Critical Language Scholarship

    Summary:
    The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at US colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad in the summer, studying a critical language. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. The Critical Language Scholarship Program is sponsored by the US Department of State with funding provided by the US Government and is supported in its implementation by American Councils for International Education.

    CLS covers language instruction and cultural programming, books and materials, international and domestic travel, visa fees (where applicable), room, board, and program-sponsored travel.

    Summary:
    The Diverse International Women Of Color (DIWC) Study Abroad Scholarship is intended to assist women of color who are exceptional in their studies and in need of financial assistance to study abroad.

    The Freeman-ASIA program is designed to support US-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.     Fulbright benefits include roundtrip transportation to the host country, a stipend for room, board and incidental expenses, and additional support.

    Summary:
    The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. The United States-Japan Bridging Foundation funds scholarships administered through AATJ to help students study abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year. Since 1999, more than 2,000 students have received Bridging Scholarships to study abroad in Japan.

    Summary:
    The purpose of the scholarship is to provide a deserving study abroad student with financial support to pursue academic study in the United Kingdom.  By offering the scholarship, AASAP/UK is fulfilling one of its purposes – the promotion and support of academic standards. The merit-based scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who demonstrates an understanding and appreciation of the value of an international educational experience and who agrees to share with AASAP/UK members the ways in which the scholarship has helped to fulfill their academic and personal ambitions.
