Award-Winning Beat Poet Gary Snyder Visits Macalester

Gary Snyder—poet, essayist, member of the Beat Generation, and leader of the San Francisco Renaissance—arrived on campus Wednesday, October 17 to host three events: a conversation on the fourth floor of Old Main in the morning, a poetry reading in Kagin Commons in the evening, and an EnviroThursday talk on October 18. EHS Hosts Halloween Coffee House and Treat Night

English students, staff, and faculty flocked to the Old Main 4th floor lounge to celebrate a haunted Halloween evening with snacks, hot drinks, and lively banter hosted by the English Honor Society. They witnessed the unmasking of this year’s department shirt, appropriately featuring Mary Shelley, the creator of the science fiction classic Frankenstein. A showing of the 1931 film version of the novel, accompanied by spooky tunes, set the mood for the seasonal soiree. See photos of the Halloween festivities…

Andrea is a California native studying Creative Writing and Media and Cultural studies.
